To lift the post-Christmas and New Year blues, many people’s attention will turn to booking holidays.
Winter sunshine resorts such as the Canary Islands, Tunisia and those in Southern Spain continue to top the list of destinations for EMA passengers between now and April. Over the coming weeks the airport will also be popular with winter sports enthusiasts flying to Geneva, Salzburg, Chambery, Sofia and Grenoble for their snow fix.
For summer holidays, mainland Spain, the Canaries, Balearics and Portugal will continue to top the list of most popular destinations. And, with 10 Greek destinations to choose from, it means that EMA serves four of the five most popular holiday destinations for UK holiday-makers (Spain, Turkey, Greece & Cyprus).
While the week-long or fortnight package holiday continues to be appealing especially with families travelling in the summer months, shorter stays and mini breaks are increasingly popular for those wanting a quick break or culture visit. And with many destinations within a two-hour flight of EMA, there is much choice for people who want to get away more frequently in 2020.
Rachel Briody, East Midlands Airport’s Travel Trade and Leisure Development Manager, says: “It seems many people in the East Midlands have decided their New Year’s resolution is to get a summer break booked with many travel agents reporting good trade in recent days. Our peak season will be busy with people escaping to sunnier climes in some of Europe and Africa’s most popular holiday resorts, while flights from EMA to cities such as Rome, Berlin, Venice, Dublin and Amsterdam, makes a short break from this region very easy to do.”
