A message from the Canberra Airport Head of Aviation – Michael Thomson,
We acknowledge the first report of a confirmed COVID 19 case in the ACT.
We are constantly monitoring the COVID 19 situation as it develops and we are responsibly following the advice of the Australian Department of Health and ACT Health.
We are following this advice to care for our passengers, our staff, our terminal staff, our tenants in our commercial properties, airline partners, and the community as a whole.
The safety, security and wellbeing of people is always our utmost concern.
Travel bans have been enforced by the Australian Government to and from a number of high risk countries to limit the arrival of potentially infected passengers. There has not been any advice to restrict domestic air travel and so the Canberra Airport remains open to service Canberra and the community. There have been no recorded cases of COVID 19 being contracted on an airline flight.
All incoming international flights will first have their passengers assessed by Australian Government Border Force and Biosecurity officers at the primary port in which they land – in the case of Canberra Airport’s daily flights operated by Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines, these flights first arrive in Australia in Sydney – passengers are assessed there.
We are in regular contact with our airline partners and contractors to discuss risks and minimise the impacts of the virus and we are communicating regularly with the vendors and businesses present at the airport.
As a precautionary measure we have increased the frequency of our cleaning rotations at the terminal, especially in high traffic areas and high touch areas. The cleaning products for these areas have been upgraded to hospital grade disinfectant and bleach as appropriate and this will continue for the duration of this event.
We have also secured supplies for the airport so that we can mitigate any impact on the supply chain.
We realise that this can be a concerning time for many. As part of the local community we understand that concern and we stand with you.
We are also keeping to that age old advice of ‘Keep Calm and Carry On” to provide you with the best service, from the best little airport.
